“Dress
Like The Big Fish”
(How To Achieve the Image You Want and the Success You
Deserve)
By Dick Lerner, Review by Dennis V. Damp Jr.
Dick Lerner’s book “Dress Like The Big Fish” describes how to
achieve success by dressing properly for interviews, day to day
work, business meetings, and corporate events. He incorporates
the importance of the 90/10 rule. Basically, 90 percent of your
communication is verbal, while 10 percent is nonverbal. Non
verbal communication includes body language and the way that you
dress. First impressions can happen within seconds in an
interview situation. This may be the first time that an
interviewer will meet you and ultimately judge you. The way that
you dress in business situations like interviews is extremely
important, since first impressions mean so much. It is best to
gain an advantage on the competition and dress properly for any
interview, meeting, or corporate event.
“Dress Like The Big Fish” describes many ways to help dress
for interviews, client meetings, and business meetings.
Throughout the book there are a number of easy to understand
checklists that will help anyone to dress for success. For
example, the author has checklists for non-clothing items
including tips on hair, cosmetics, and facial hair. Some
clothing item tips may include selecting proper suit jackets,
slacks, or shoes for every occasion. The author’s descriptions
are detailed and easy to understand for anyone with an upcoming
interview or big event.
This book describes professional dress tips for both men and
women. Dick Lerner outlines the best colors for men’s interview
suits and non interview suits. He also goes further into the
process by describing proper belt widths, dress shoes, and
outerwear for cold weather. Professional dress for women is
described as well in this book. There are a few more clothing
options for women including blouses, jewelry, and purses.
Detailed descriptions of proper suits styles for women, neckwear
(scarves or jewelry), and accessories are given as well. While
some tips may seem like common sense, there are plenty of ideas
here that only someone who has done plenty of research would
know. For example, how do you pick the proper fabric choices for
dress clothes or the optimal coat length for winter weather.
“Dress Like The Big Fish” also describes all the differences
between business casual and casual dress for both men and women.
There are many subtle differences between the two styles of
dress in the workplace. The book poses questions and gives you
tips to dress for the proper occasion. For example, some people
may think casual dress may include blue jeans, and this is not
the necessarily the case. Throughout the book you will find
helpful tips for any occasion. There are even a number of
personal hygiene items outlined including tips on perfume
fragrances, cosmetics, and nails. Also included in the book is a
chapter dedicated to the proper understanding of how your
clothes should fit. From my personal experience on interviews, I
have always wondered if it is appropriate to take a briefcase or
a folio. Dick Lerner describes these types of things and more,
including proper cuff links for men or jewelry for women.
“Dress Like The Big Fish” also provides dress tips for black
tie affairs, conventions, company meetings, and resort meetings.
Toward the back of the book there are plenty of checklists with
examples to plan a wardrobe for professional, business casual,
and casual events. Dick’s message throughout the book is this “I
care about how I look and how others see me” in any situation.
This is a direct quote from the book and describes exactly what
this book is about. If you are in need of dress tips for
interviews, business meetings, or special occasions this is the
book for you.
