FEDERAL EXECUTIVE BOARDS

Federal Executive Boards (FEBs) were established to improve coordination among federal activities and programs outside of Washington. Approximately 84 percent of all federal employees work outside the national capital area. For job seekers the FEBs offer a wealth of information. Primarily, most of them compile directories of all agency offices in their area with contact information. Contact the FEB in your area to obtain a list of ALL federal offices in your area. This valuable resource gives the job seeker a total picture of potential employment options that are within commuting distance to their present location.

There are currently 30 FEBs located in cities that are major centers of federal activity. The boards are located in the following metropolitan areas: Albuquerque, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Newark, New Orleans, New York, Oklahoma City, Oregon, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, San Antonio, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and Seattle. The Boards are composed of the federal field office agency heads and military commanders in these cities.

In cities where FEBs do not exist, another organization of local principal federal agency officials often exists. These organizations are generally entitled Federal Executive Associations or Councils, and have purposes and objectives similar to FEBs. They do not, however, function within the same formal set of parameters (e.g., officially established by presidential memorandum, policy direction and guidance from the Office of Personnel Management, etc.) as do the FEBs.

Most of the FEBs have Internet Web sites. Use the following list for networking purposes and to call or e-mail local offices for listings of agencies in your area. The address and contact information is provided for the three locations that do not have web sites at this time.

WARNING - CAUTION

Don't be enticed by government job scams. Federal agencies do not charge anyone to apply for employment or to take a civil service test if required. We found a number of misleading government job ads recently on national job posting services. These ads list a toll free number and they attempt to sell you a government job hunting service for anywhere from $70 to over a $100. A site visitor who purchased one of these services reported receiving a copy of our book, The Book of U.S. Government Jobs that is available on this site for only $19.95, or at your local bookstore. This book is also available at many libraries in their reference department. Most federal jobs are advertised on government agency web sites that we provide links to on this site. Explore government job options on http://federaljobs.net and go direct to the agency links we provide for job listings and additional information. There are also several private sector low cost services that compile extensive federal job lists from all sources and provide additional helpful support services that we link to on this site as well.
