The Department of Veterans Affairs employs 442,938 persons and operates programs to benefit veterans and their families with an annual budget of $301.4 billion. The Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) provides care at 1,298 health care facilities, including 171 medical centers and 1,113 outpatient sites (VHA outpatient clinics). They serve 9 million enrolled Veterans each year.

Benefits include disability compensation payments or death related to military service; education; pensions; rehabilitation; home loan guaranty; burial; and medical care programs incorporating nursing homes, clinics, and medical centers. The VA was established in 1989 and employs physicians, and all medical specialties under the VA’s excepted merit system. This does not require civil service eligibility.

Recently, the VA extended coverage to many more veterans that suffered from toxic exposure to burn pits, agent orange, and other toxic substances through the PACT Act.
