The DOD was established in 1947 just after World War II and is responsible for providing the military forces required to fight and deter war and to protect this country’s security. Major elements are the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps consisting of close to 1.5 million men and women on active duty. In case of emergency, they are backed up by 1 million reserve forces members. In addition, there are about 675,744 Defense Department civilian employees. This executive branch department is the largest civilian employer and has an annual budget of $651 billion. The jobs in the United States are distributed throughout every state plus the District of Columbia. The majority of military installations hire civilian personnel. Many are hired off of OPM’s federal registers, and others are special appointments for hiring veterans, spouses and family members of military personnel, the handicapped, minorities and others. The DOD is also the largest employer of Wage Grade and trade workers.
